Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2012, $74,429)

The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 (AWA) (Pub. L. 109-248, 42 U.S.C. § 16901, et seq) authorizes the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART) to administer sex offender management grants. These grants assist state, local and tribal jurisdictions in developing and/or enhancing sex offender registration and notification programs that support substantial implementation of Title I of the AWA, known as the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). SORNA was enacted to protect the public from convicted sex offenders and offenders against children by establishing a comprehensive national system for the registration of those offenders.

The Pueblo of Santa Ana will continue to work towards SORNA implementation and enhance its existing registration and notification program. The Pueblo will continue to conduct registration and monitoring activities by supporting overtime costs for a Pueblo of Santa Ana police officer to conduct these activities. Grant funds will support costs associated with operating the SORNA office, such as office supplies, and computer equipment upgrades and maintenance. The project will also support costs associated with public education and awareness activities, and training for personnel working on SORNA implementation and sex offender registry issues through attendance at the SMART National Symposium on Sex Offender Management and Accountability.
